Arrival and Departure Dates
As with every summer, Camp Widjiitiwin has a commitment to its campers and parents to provide excellent quality service during their stay. Camp Widjiitiwin staff are required to arrive on Saturday, June 23, 2018 by 4 pm. All Widji staff must work until Sunday, September 1, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Before you apply, be realistic about the departure date. If you commit to being here (and acceptance of a position indicates that fact), we expect you and your parents to hold to your commitment.
Staff Development Week & Work Weekends
On May 18-21 (the Victoria Day weekend) Camp Widjiitiwin is having an initial staff development training event in combination with a work weekend. We’ll spend Friday night settling in and getting to know each other. On Saturday we’ll be working to get camp ready for the summer. We’ll go to chapel at MBC on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon through Monday morning will be about learning about camp and what you need to know as summer staff. Click here to check the tentative weekend schedule.
Summer staff development week is June 24 – 30, 2018. General and specialized training sessions will be given during the first days after arrival. Any special advance preparation assignments will be communicated well in advance. This week is mandatory.
The uniform will be purple golf or t-shirts and black pants or shorts. Each summer staff member will need at least one pair of shorts and one pair of long pants. Widji will provide the shirts.
Criminal Record Checks
Police checks are required for all Widji staff. More details will follow once you are hired for the summer.
There are five spring crew positions available at Camp Widjiitiwin for the 2018 spring season. They are for the Assistant Director, SALT Director, Camp Admin, Head Cook and Program Director. If one of these staff is unable to come for the spring we will look at other staff to fill those positions. Spring crew starts May 7th and runs through to staff development week on June 23rd. The work will be to get camp ready for the summer, create programming resources, build bike trails, do clean up, help on both work weekends and more. The spring crew salary for 2018 is $1500 for the season. Plus you receive room and board as a taxable benefit.
Summer Leadership Staff
Leadership staff will attend a leadership weekend on May 6-8, 2018 at MBC in addition to the Staff Work/Development weekend. Leaders must be able to start at camp on June 19th to be settled in and ready when summer staff arrive.
Each staff is required to have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) before starting work. If you do not have a SIN, please start that application process to receive it ASAP. It is done through the Human Resources Canada, www.servicecanada.ca. Also note that international students are not permitted to serve with us unless they have the appropriate visas/work permits.
Days off are one day per week for seasonal staff and will be arranged with your direct supervisor or the camp director. Operations staff and summer leaders will get one full day off per week. Cabin leaders receive each Saturday afternoon through chapel on Sunday off plus a full day each week.
Summer staff accommodations will be assigned by the camp director. Cabin leaders will stay in cabins with their campers, kitchen and service staff will stay in the Tub or Tubette, the Nurse/medic will stay in the Medicine Hut and other senior staff will be assigned to the cabins nearby the Medicine Hut. Limited rooming requests may be made once you have been hired.
Your Physical Well-being
At Camp Widjiitiwin we have a camp nurse to assist us with emergency first aid and dispensing medications. NO medication may be kept where campers can access it. Each team member will be responsible for any medication, prescriptions, or hospital expenses they incur.
Close living quarters, the continuation of assigned duties, the shortness of the summer, limitation of space in the Medicine Hut, and concern for the welfare of the team member – these factors may combine to necessitate termination of employment if a health problem persists. For example, heavy chest congestion can be serious, may infect others, and will prevent continuation of jobs involving food handling or contact with guests; though not a mark of personal failure, termination may be necessary.
A completed health form (sent with your contract) will be required as a condition of employment.
Information for Parents/Guardians
For applicants under 18 years of age it is imperative that a parent/guardian read carefully the Information Packet and Ministry Service Team Information Form with your contract if you are hired. He/she will be required to sign the Permission Form for your contract to be accepted. Their signing supports the implementation of standards and rules of Camp Widjiitiwin.
Summer camp should be a place where you grow in your knowledge and experience of God. Therefore, your spiritual growth this summer is one of our primary concerns. It has also been identified by past summer staff as an area of great significance. This summer we have many ways to encourage your spiritual development.
