“You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” Benjamin Mee, We Bought a Zoo
Benjamin takes a big risk and talks to the girl in the restaurant (she eventually becomes his wife) and when he bought a zoo, moved his kids far away from friends and started over. He encourages his kids to do the same.
God said it a little differently to Joshua. For him it looked a lot like, “Be strong and courageous.” Joshua 1:6, 7 & 9. Three times God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous. Each time the words that follow create an emphasis. First, it’s that the people will inherit the land. Second, that they should follow all that is written in the Law. And, third that God will be with them.
Joshua was on his way into the Promised Land. His mentor and leader, Moses, had died. The crowd of Israelites is rowdy, unruly and complains a lot. Joshua had a huge job to go in and tame the land and its current citizens. He felt completely unworthy and incapable for the task at hand. Yet God was ready and would be with Joshua.
“Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.” C. S. Lewis
What has God called you to do that requires you to have 20 seconds of insane courage? What do you need to be strong and courageous about?
